Suno, Udio and the label lawsuits: timeline
From the June 2024 RIAA suits to the 2025 settlements, GEMA's Munich win and the September 2026 suit over Suno v6. Dated and sourced.
These cases shape what AI music tools are allowed to train on, which affects the songs that end up on streaming services.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| June 2024 | The three major labels, through the RIAA, sue Suno and Udio for copyright infringement “on a massive scale” in training their models. | Music Ally |
| Oct 30, 2025 | Universal Music Group settles with Udio. They plan a licensed creation and streaming service for 2026; meanwhile Udio creations stay “within a walled garden”. | Music Ally |
| Nov 19, 2025 | Warner Music Group and Udio settle and agree to build a licensed service for 2026, with models trained on licensed music. | WMG |
| Nov 25, 2025 | Warner Music Group settles with Suno. Suno is to replace its models with licensed ones in 2026, downloads will need a paid account, and Suno buys Songkick from WMG. | TechCrunch |
| Jul 31, 2026 | The Munich District Court rules for German collecting society GEMA against Suno over six songs, including “Daddy Cool” and “Forever Young”, rejects fair use, and finds Suno liable for damages. Suno can appeal. | Bird & Bird |
| Sep 18, 2026 | Sony Music and UMG file a new suit against Suno over its v6 model, made with licensed content from WMG, BMG and Believe. They say v6 still builds on older models and cite 60,202 recordings. Suno calls the claims “fundamentally flawed”. | Variety |
What this means for listeners
Settlements so far trade lawsuits for licensing: the labels get paid and some control over their artists’ voices, and the AI companies move to licensed models. That does not label any song. To find out whether a song you heard is AI, see How to tell if a song is AI.
We update this timeline when a court or a party publishes something new.
