AI songs on the charts: Billboard, ARIA, Melon

ARIA bars wholly AI-generated tracks, Billboard and Luminate plan to identify them, Melon has no rule yet. What each chart allows and who has charted.

Short answer, as of Oct 23, 2026: Australia’s ARIA Charts no longer count wholly AI-generated recordings. Billboard has not announced a ban; it says it will identify songs on its charts that use AI. Melon, Korea’s biggest streaming chart, has no AI rule or label, and songs with AI vocals have reached its Top 100.

The rule most official charts are moving toward

On Jul 29, 2026, Universal, Warner, Sony, HYBE, Believe and other music companies proposed chart rules for songs made with AI. They asked that songs labeled “AI-generated” not be chart-eligible (Billboard).

The next day the recording industry body IFPI rolled out principles along the same lines. A recording made with generative AI qualifies only if the AI service is “properly authorised and lawful”, the track is “substantially human made”, and it raises no chart manipulation concerns. IFPI applies this to the charts it runs in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, and says it is working with national groups on more than 20 others, including Korea’s Circle Chart and Australia’s ARIA Charts (IFPI).

ARIA (Australia): wholly AI tracks are out

ARIA’s rule took effect with the chart dated Aug 31, 2026. “Wholly AI-generated tracks will not be eligible for the ARIA Charts. Recordings that use generative AI in a supporting role remain eligible” (ARIA).

ARIA’s FAQ draws the line at the lead vocal and the main instruments (ARIA FAQ):

  • Not eligible: an AI-generated lead vocal, an AI-generated key instrumental part, or music generated from a prompt.
  • Eligible (AI-assisted): humans wrote the song and performed the lead vocal and main instruments; AI added something minor, such as backing vocals.
  • Eligible (AI in production): AI mastering, stem separation, AI drum machines, AI reverb.

Every release submitted to ARIA now carries a declaration about generative AI use. If ARIA has a concern, it contacts the rights holder before deciding, and the decision can be appealed to its Chart & Marketing Committee and then its Board. ARIA will not publish a list of excluded recordings. A re-recording with human vocals counts as a new recording (ARIA FAQ).

If a recording is found ineligible, ARIA can remove it from past charts, withdraw accreditations and take back an ARIA No. 1 Award. It also can’t win an ARIA Award (ARIA). For now ARIA has not applied IFPI’s “authorised AI service” test (ARIA FAQ).

Billboard and Luminate: label first

On Aug 25, 2026, Billboard announced “its commitment to creating greater transparency around the use of artificial intelligence in music, including identifying songs on its charts and in its editorial coverage that use AI”. The statement does not set an eligibility rule. Co-Chief Content Officer Leila Cobo said “it is critical that creators leveraging AI identify use” (Billboard).

The same day, the entertainment data company Luminate said it will add an “AI Generated” label to songs and artist profiles its system identifies, starting later in 2026. Artists and labels can ask for a review if they think the label is wrong (Billboard). In July, Billboard reported that no streaming service or chart, Billboard included, had formally adopted the industry’s AI-tagging systems (Billboard).

AI acts that have already charted on Billboard

Billboard counted at least six AI or AI-assisted artists that debuted on its charts in the few months before November 2025, mostly on sales and genre charts, where about 1,000 downloads in a week can be enough (Billboard):

  • Xania Monet reached No. 3 on Hot Gospel Songs with “Let Go, Let God” and became the first known AI artist on a Billboard radio chart, debuting at No. 30 on Adult R&B Airplay.
  • Solomon Ray debuted at No. 18 on Hot Gospel Songs with “Find Your Rest”.
  • Breaking Rust debuted at No. 9 on Emerging Artists.
  • Cain Walker, which Billboard calls “AI-assisted”, debuted at No. 7 on Country Digital Song Sales.
  • Unbound Music and Enlly Blue reached the Emerging Artists chart.

Has an AI-generated song made the Hot 100?

Billboard has not marked any Hot 100 entry as AI-generated, as far as we found by Oct 23, 2026. The most-discussed case is “Rubberz” by Fenix Flexin, which rose to No. 58 on the Hot 100 (Stereogum). In June the Los Angeles rapper answered AI accusations by saying the song was “recorded same as all music I do” (Billboard). In August, Ryan Tremblay, co-founder of the AI music app Treblo, said “Someone appears to have used our model to find a sound that millions of people connected with”, and Stereogum called it the first AI-generated hit to crack the Hot 100 (Stereogum). Fenix Flexin then wrote on Instagram that he “never said I didn’t use AI” and that it “had nun to do w recording process” (The Verge). Deezer tags the single “AI-generated content” (checked Oct 23, 2026).

An earlier case went the other way. Billboard says the original version of HAVEN.’s “I Run” was withheld from its charts, including the Hot 100, because of an active copyright dispute and takedowns, under Billboard’s rule for titles in legal disputes. That was not an AI rule. The producers told Billboard they used “AI-assisted vocal processing” to transform one producer’s own voice (Billboard). A re-recording with new vocals by Kaitlin Aragon later hit No. 1 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, on the chart dated Feb 21, 2026 (Billboard). See our HAVEN. page.

Melon (South Korea): no AI rule, AI vocals in the Top 100

“Forest of the Heart” by the YouTube channel Joseon Hiphop entered Melon’s Top 100 on Sep 6, 2026, the first AI-generated track to do so, per The Korea Herald. The creator used Suno for the composition and vocals (The Korea Herald). It peaked at No. 89 (The Korea Times).

In October, “The Adult I Dreamed Of” by Meomuru reached No. 3 on Melon’s Top 100. The album description says the vocals were generated with Suno, while Meomuru wrote the lyrics and directed the production (The Korea Herald).

Melon has not announced any eligibility rule. As of Oct 22, 2026, Melon, FLO and Bugs had no separate label for AI-generated music, and an industry official said the services were waiting for guidelines (Seoul Economic Daily). A platform official told Dailian that nothing in the release registration process asks whether AI was used. Listeners knew about these two songs only because the creators said so (Dailian).

Korea’s music copyright society, KOMCA, adopted rules for registering AI-assisted songs on Aug 3, 2026, then withdrew them on Aug 25 (The Korea Times).

What a chart position tells you

A chart entry says people streamed or bought a song. It says nothing about who made it. To check a song, start with the creator’s statement and the streaming service’s label, as in how to tell if a song is AI. Our label pages track what each service shows.
